Description

During my pleasant and undisturbed vacation a couple of days back, I felt the need to make this. A lot of people had grown curious about Mao Li's origins so I've decided to share this. Go ahead and take your time reading, as I took my time to develop this character in a span of three weeks.

Name:
Former: Mao Li
Updated: Ying Maoli
[英 - ying, brave] [狸猫 - limao inverted to 猫狸 - maoli, leopard cat] (source: Chindict)
Also known as: Ying, Master Ying, Master Maoli

Species: Eurasian lynx
A classification of lynx native to Sinkiang, Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan, and Shaanxi provinces of China. (Wikipedia)

Gender: Female
Fighting Style: Wushu
Appearance: brown striped fur and amber eyes
Place of Origin: Jingfeng City [劲 - Jing, strong/powerful] [飌 - Feng, wind]
A flourishing city high above the mountains. Known for the occasional strong winds and rich development

Background
Ying is the only daughter of Jingfeng City's master, Master Maoli. Because of this, she is expected to carry on in her father's place as the next great master. However, being the only child, Master Maoli is overprotective of his daughter, which let Ying grow into a very introverted and timid person. Saving her father helped Ying transform into the brave and strong warrior her father had always wished her to be, and it also made him realize his mistake. After which, Master Maoli had lifted his strictness and allowed Ying to grow into a more stronger warrior.

Personality
To most people, Ying is considered shy and introverted. Other than her fellow students, she rarely talks to other people. Her shyness and inexperience in the outside world had given her a rather low self-esteem and fear, which she desperately hides as she didn't want it to make her look weak and helpless. After her life-changing adventure, Ying now stands as one of the bravest warriors and protector of her city, making her father and fellow students proud of her.

Her strength, courage and kindess are her best assets.

Despite being the shy and timid type, Ying is quite skilled at the art of Wushu. She is a very determined student and is very passionate in her craft. She would stop at nothing to be the best wushu warrior in her city and make her father
proud. Her only drive is to win her father's faith in her, which she desperately tries to earn through her rigorous training.

Fighting Style
Skilled in Wushu, Ying makes use of a bamboo pole with metal cylinders on both ends for both offense and defense. She also has an array of small knives hidden in her clothing, which she uses for throwing or sometimes, as an attachment to her pole. Her weapons are supplied by her blacksmith uncle.

Character Development
Ying Maoli, or formerly known as Mao Li, was first intended to be my self-insert fursona to the Kung Fu Panda world, like, how I would look like if I was in it or how I would prefer to be. Initially, I took the liberty of finding a suitable animal, researching on the common animals found in mainland China. The Eurasian Lynx became very appealing and so it became my animal of choice. I then chose Wushu to be her martial art as a reflection of my desire to learn it.

Weeks passed and while developing Jiang, Ying's development came in slowly.

However, during my recent trip to Hong Kong, I managed to get it all together and finalize Ying's character.

Ying is greatly inspired by Master Viper and Toph Bei Fong of Avatar: the Last Airbender, especially with the daddy-daughter issues. The concept art for the Wu Sisters are also a great help. The reference allowed me to improve the anatomy and the essence of the character. Though I am far from perfecting it on this style, I try my best to have her look accurately close as possible.

As shown above, you can see where Ying Maoli started as, and how she ended up being what she is now.

Just like Mayu, Haley, Firi-tan and Jiang herself, Ying Maoli also took time to improve, especially on the art style. Nicolas Marlet's style is something new to me but I always try my best to have her look as close to his style as possible. I do have a long way to go but the only way there is to keep practicing. I look at references from the Kung Fu Panda Wiki where Marlet's works can be seen. This is where I get my references, and of course, there is google for the pictures of wild cats but other than that, nowhere else actually.

I will make Jiang's too, if anyone else is curious as to how I came up with such OCs.

I'm sorry for the lack of human drawings lately, too but I need a rather big break. I will resume with the commissions soon though..

If you are quite the curious type, I appreciate polite questions =)
